Key Breakthrough Achieved in Deep-Earth Exploration Equipment: Rongsheng Company'’s China’s First 175 MPa Ultra-High-Pressure BOP Stack Wins Its First Field Application

2026-01-16

Recently, the first domestically developed ultra-high-pressure BOP stack by Rongsheng Company', with a 35 cm bore and a rated working pressure of 175 MPa, was successfully applied in the fourth drilling section of Keshen 3105 Well in the Tarim Oilfield, enabling safe drilling to 7,945.2 meters. Under extreme operating conditions including ultra-deep depth, high temperature, and high pressure, the equipment’s pressure-bearing capacity and operational reliability were fully verified, marking an important breakthrough by the company in the field of ultra-high-pressure and ultra-high-temperature well control equipment and adding another powerful well control tool for China’s exploration and development of resources at depths of 10,000 meters.

Located in the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, Keshen 3105 Well is a typical ultra-deep, high-temperature, high-pressure gas well. Its complex geological structure, combined with extremely high formation pressure, places unprecedentedly stringent demands on the reliability and pressure-bearing capacity of wellhead equipment. Led by Tarim Oilfield and independently developed by Rongsheng Company', the 175 MPa ultra-high-pressure BOP stack is designed for extreme operating conditions including a 177°C limit temperature and an environment containing 30% hydrogen sulfide. During the fourth drilling section, the equipment withstood multiple operating conditions including drilling, kick shut-in, and tripping drill string through tool joints with the annular BOP. A total of 22 blowout prevention drills covering four types of operating conditions were carried out, and the opening and closing actions, automatic ram locking and unlocking actions, and all other functions operated normally throughout, with stable and reliable sealing performance from start to finish.

The 175 MPa ultra-high-pressure BOP stack includes both ram BOPs and an annular BOP. The internationally pioneering annular BOP with a 35 cm bore and a rated pressure of 105 MPa overcomes the technical challenge of balancing the large deformation of the annular packing element with the elastic requirements for pressure bearing. Its design breaks with convention by adopting an integrated boltless-bonnet structure, reducing ram replacement time from 4.5 hours for traditional BOPs to 50 minutes. The hydraulic quick connection flange technology shortens the flange connection time for a single 175 MPa unit from 4 hours to 40 minutes, completely transforming the traditional operating mode of flange connection. The super shear ram BOP can shear a 5 7/8 in. V-150 drill pipe tool joint within 20 seconds, enabling it to meet a variety of emergency response needs.

The company assembled a dedicated task-force team covering multiple disciplines, including materials science, mechanical design, and rubber processing. Over two years of design work, the team conducted thousands of tests, carried out finite element simulation stress analysis on key parts of both metal and rubber components, built its own composite load test bench, and developed a new mixing process technology. Through prototype manufacturing and factory acceptance testing, the team ultimately succeeded in overcoming a series of challenges under ultra-high-pressure conditions, including structural integrity, sealing durability, and operational reliability. The product possesses fully independent intellectual property rights, and its core parameters have reached, and in some aspects even exceeded, the advanced level of comparable international products.

The successful application of Rongsheng Company'’s 175 MPa ultra-high-pressure BOP stack fills the technical gap in comparable ultra-high-pressure BOPs both in China and abroad, fully demonstrating Rongsheng Company'’s scientific R&D and independent innovation capability, and providing critical equipment support for the safe and efficient exploration and development of China’s deep oil and gas resources.
