Another Major Safety Breakthrough for China’s Deep and Ultra-Deep Oil and Gas Development

Authoritative experts conclude that the overall achievement has reached the international advanced level, with core technologies taking the international lead.
(Correspondent: Li Liye) On February 20, the scientific and technological achievements evaluation meeting for the project “Key Technologies and Industrial Application of Well Control Equipment for Safe Deep and Ultra-Deep Oil and Gas Development” was successfully held under the organization of the China Center for Information Industry Development. Led by Academician Zhang Laibin of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Li Xunke, Senior Expert of CNOOC, the review committee, composed of multiple industry experts and professors, conducted an authoritative evaluation of the project jointly developed by Hebei Huabei Petroleum Rongsheng Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Rongsheng Company'), leading drilling enterprises, universities, and research institutes. The committee unanimously concluded that the project successfully overcame key well-control technical challenges in deep and ultra-deep oil and gas development, achieved independent innovation and industrial application of critical equipment, reached the international advanced level overall, and realized international leadership in some core technologies.
As oil and gas exploration advances deeper underground, the development of deep and ultra-deep resources has become the main battlefield for increasing reserves and production. Deep formation development faces extreme operating conditions such as ultra-high temperature (249°C), ultra-high pressure (170 MPa), and high hydrogen sulfide content. Traditional well-control equipment has shown clear shortcomings in corrosion resistance, sealing reliability, and intelligent operation, making breakthroughs in key high-performance well-control system technologies urgently needed to address the challenges of safe and efficient development.
As a leading domestic BOP manufacturer, Rongsheng Company' served as the principal research unit of this project, focusing on the critical bottlenecks in well-control equipment for deep and ultra-deep oil and gas development. Facing these challenges head-on and taking on the responsibility, the company achieved major breakthrough innovations over more than ten years of intensive research in structural design, materials and process technology, intelligent control and maintenance, and testing technology. These advances have significantly improved the stability and safety of well-control equipment under extreme conditions, filled multiple technological gaps in China’s well-control equipment field, and been widely applied in deep and ultra-deep oil and gas exploration and development projects both in China and abroad. The company’s self-developed high-temperature, high-pressure, sour-service resistant rubber material, multi-tooth clamp-type body side door quick connection structure, and hydraulically driven flange quick connection structure, all with fully independent intellectual property rights, have reached the international leading level.
Zhang Laibin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at China University of Petroleum (Beijing), spoke highly of Rongsheng Company'’s technological achievements. He pointed out that, as a top domestic and internationally renowned well-control equipment manufacturer, Rongsheng Company'’s technological breakthroughs in well-control equipment for deep and ultra-deep oil and gas development not only demonstrate the outstanding innovation capability of China’s equipment manufacturing enterprises, but also provide a Chinese solution and contribute Chinese wisdom to the safe development of the global oil and gas industry, marking that China has entered the forefront of the world in this technical field.
Xu Hongqi, Executive Vice General Manager of Rongsheng Company', stated that the company has always regarded scientific and technological innovation as the core driving force of its development.
