Rongsheng Company's Independently Developed China’s First Subsea Capping Stack Successfully Passes Risk Review for Deepwater Trial Program

2021-03-20

(Correspondents Liu Libing, Ma Xiaosheng, and Zhang Wenjing) On March 16, the first subsea capping stack independently developed by Rongsheng Company successfully completed the final test before offshore deployment at Haikou Port, Hainan, and passed the review of the deepwater trial operation program and sea-trial risks conducted by an expert panel composed of professor-level senior engineers from CNOOC China Limited, CNOOC Research Institute, CNPC Energy Economics Research Institute, and other organizations.

The national key R&D program project subsea capping stack undertaken by Rongsheng Company went through three years of technical research, overcoming more than 20 key technologies. Under the full-process verification of the authoritative certification body DNV, it passed strict factory acceptance testing and successfully completed a shallow-water sea trial in the Yantai sea area. The complete-unit testing and sea-trial risk review carried out this time at CNOOC's Haikou Port was the most critical full-unit test before the deepwater trial of the equipment. In order to complete this final test, Rongsheng Company's R&D team completed the full assembly of the subsea capping stack at Haikou Port and, under the on-site witness of DNV engineers, carried out more than 30 functional tests as well as three-stage low-pressure tests and a 105 MPa high-pressure test. All pressure tests were passed successfully on the first attempt. At the test site, after on-site observation and prudent review of the data, the attending experts fully affirmed Rongsheng Company's innovative achievements in the field of offshore well control equipment manufacturing over the past more than ten years, and highly praised the innovative highlights of this subsea capping stack.

The subsea capping stack, independently designed, independently developed, and independently manufactured by Rongsheng Company with fully independent intellectual property rights, has achieved a localization rate of 90.26%, and its technical indicators have reached the advanced level of comparable international products, making China one of the very few countries capable of producing a subsea capping stack. The equipment is expected to carry out a deepwater emergency rescue operation drill on a deepwater drilling platform in the western South China Sea. After the successful completion of the sea trial, this equipment will help reverse China's passive situation of being dependent on others in emergency rescue for offshore oil blowouts and oil spills, and will provide strong equipment support for China's offshore energy security.
